Silence.n, A lack of noise or sound.
Have you ever thought about what silence means to God?
Last Thursday, BASIC, an on campus ministry, was talking about the importance of quiet time. When the subject was brought up, I was questioning myself on how much I talk during the day....let's just say the answer was a large amount of time. Then I thought about how much time I am alone to think about God. I need to work on this.
Carter, the speaker, then said something I will never forget. "Are you more afraid of hearing what God has to say than not hearing Him at all? May you have courage to give more time to the one who made time. May 'NO,' become a part of your vocabulary. May you embrace the silence and hear God's whisper."
I thought this message was very important to think about. How much time do you give God during the day? Do you hear him speak to you? If not, you may want to think about slowing down next time on the walk to class (if you are a little ahead of schedule), having dinner by yourself, or staying in on a Friday. These little things we do give God glory and the ability to make us hear what He wants to say.
I don't think this means never hanging out with friends or talking on the way to class, but think about it. How much time do you spend in solitude to hear God's whisper?
Matthew 14:23 discusses what took place after Jesus fed the 5,000 people. (This was BASIC's example used)
"Immediately, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitude away. And when He had sent the multitude away, He went up on the mountain to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there."
Mark 1:35 discusses what happened after Jesus preached in Galilee.
"Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed."
Reading this reminds me that even Jesus needed time away from the crowds and time to spend alone with God. Humbly, I take on this responsibility to spend some time in solitude away from noise and distractions...spending this time in silence.
Until next time,
